With proper inspection and care, a Safety hard hat can be used for 5 years, after which 5AAit should be replaced. They come in different colors. These colors signify different roles performed by workers at construction sites. For example a white hat for workmen, blue for supervisors, red for safety inspectors and yellow for technical advisor's. They can be fitted with accessories depending on the nature of the job.

Some of the common ones are a visor (welding visor or a riot squad helmet visor), helmet light mount, ear protectors and mirrors for increased rear field of view.
